Well, I got a little reprieve from Fibro Fog and Concussion Thinking. One of my granddaughters called to ask how to take care of her ROTC shoes since they are similar to police shoes. I was able to reach back cognitively and give her advice. Then she asked me if I could help her with an Algebra problem. I said, "honey it's been nearly 45 years since I've had to think about Algebra." But I gave it the old college try. She showed me the problem, oh did I mention we were video chatting? I looked at it
x/8+3=19
and realized it was easy. Don't know why, I hated Algebra in high school. I instructed her to deconstruct the problem:
"you have two solid, known numbers ... 3 and 19. So subtract 3 from 19 because you know that 3 + blank eguals 19. Now what do you have?"
She responded "16".
Good, now you know that x/8, X divided by 8 equals 16.
Again you have two solid, known numbers ... 8 and 16.
So multiply 8 by 16 since X divided by 8 equals 16. Now what do you have?"
She responded "128".
I then asked "so what does X equal"?
She excitedly answered "128".
I informed my granddaughter that the method I just walked her through may not work on
every Algebra problem and may not be the method that her teacher is expecting her to use but it is an easy one.
Then she said, "YaYa is your concussion feeling better? You were able to help me with two different problems and you don't look like your head is hurting."
I didn't have the heart to tell her that my dizziness and headache increased. I was so happy I could help her.
