Who is an Advocate?

Through condition specific education such as that found on the internet or in support groups, we can become our own best advocates.

An advocate is someone who speaks on behalf of a specific person, group, or social, or, political cause.  A Fibromyalgia advocate would be someone who speaks on behalf of either a specific person with Fibro or the Fibromyalgia community in general.

Who can be an Advocate?

Anyone can be an advocate.   Shelly McLaughlin of Pathfinders for Autism states, "an advocate is simply someone who is:

  • Committed to change;

  • Willing and able to publicly share their commitment;

and

  • Open to increasing their knowledge and understanding of an issue." (4)
